On April 17th, 2026, I will debut my first big-band album as a leader. The music that I re-imagined is by Thelonius Monk. The concept behind this project was to create an atmosphere of rhythms to accompany Monk's great melodies. Being Nuyorican and playing Jazz only helped me develop the idea for this beautiful album. Born in South Bronx, New York in 1979, bassist Carlos Henriquez is set to thrill Jazz St. Louis audiences with his captivating style! He studied music at a young age, played guitar through junior high school, and took up the bass while enrolled in the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement program. He entered Laguardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts and was involved with the Laguardia Concert Jazz Ensemble, which went on to win first place in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington high school jazz band competition and festival in 1996. In 1998, swiftly after high school, Henriquez joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, touring the world and featuring on more than 25 albums. Henriquez has performed and recorded with artists including Chucho Valdes, Paco de Lucia, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Danilo Perez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Marc Anthony, and many others. He has been a member of the music faculty at Northwestern University School of Music since 2008 and was music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s cultural exchange with the Cuban Institute of Music with Chucho Valdes in 2010. Since then, Carlos has lead many Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts as a featured artist and has brought a new sound to the organization with his duo musical visions. His collaboration with the great Ruben Blades gave Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra a huge new outlook to playing salsa/latin jazz. Henriquez is no stranger to the musical afro dialect in jazz and latin styles. He continues to flourish as a great bassist with three great projects as a leader. The Bronx Pyramid, Dizzy Con Clave, and the latest the South Bronx Story, which is a bold multi-movement work of the social history of the South Bronx, draws from Henriquez’s personal Puerto Rican heritage. Puente for a New Generation artists include: Michael Rodríguez, Bruce Harris, Jonathan Powell and Kali Rodríguez, trumpets; Carl Maraghi, Ivan Renta, and Louis Fouche, saxophones; Robert Rodrìguez, piano; Marcos López, timbales; Marcos Torres, congas; and Camilo Molina, bongos.

Noche de talentos, con el lado afrocubano de Dizzi Gillespie, ofreció Carlos Henríquez *Con su banda, tuvo una notable participación en el Festival Cultural Sinaloa 2017 Una gran noche para los amantes del jazz, ofrecieron Carlos Henríquez y The New York Latin Jazz All Star, en el Teatro Pablo de Villavicencio, con el programa Dizzy con clave, El lado latino de Dizzi Gillespie, a cargo de experimentados y apasionados intérpretes, quienes celebraron entre las salvas de aplausos del público un centenario del nacimiento de Dizzy Gillespie. El espectáculo se presentó en el marco del festival Cultural Sinaloa 2017, que organiza el Gobierno del Estado de Sinaloa a través del Instituto Sinaloense de Cultura, con el apoyo de la Secretaría de Cultura federal. El programa entusiasmó desde el principio con la pieza Manteca, para continuar con Kush, Grooving high, Guarachi Guaro, Con alma y A nigth in Tunissia para cerrar con Beboop, en las que los intérpretes dieron sobradas muestras de su talento con los típicos solos e improvisaciones a dos o tres por pieza, enloqueciendo a los amantes del jazz que se congregaron esta noche, que no cesaron de aplaudir y de vitorear las mejores ejecuciones. Carlos Henríquez, quien es bajista de la Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra y un maestro en el idioma del jazz latino, tocó su instrumento y dirigió a la banda que por hora y media fascinó a los fans del género, y la cual se ha presentado con éxito en Mazatlán y Los Mochis dentro de este Festival.
